Clubhouse Gets New Mirror Ball

Bit by bit we have transformed what was once called the “Multi-purpose Room” into a full fledged Ballroom. First, Frank DeCarlo strung the ceiling lights, and now we have a 20 inch mirror ball. John Pellerito scaled a 12 foot ladder with the huge globe in one hand, after installing an electric motor. We connected the motor to a remote control wall switch, eliminating the need to haul out the bulky ladder each time we wanted to turn the ball on and off. The old system, with a tiny mirror ball, used a battery operated motor to rotate it. Now we can turn both the lights and the ball on from a wall switch. In addition, the system came with a pin spotlight that has different colored lenses. We tried out the ball during our Ballroom Dance on July 14th, and it worked flawlessly and created a really cool atmosphere. Since so many residents enjoy dancing, we’ll get plenty of opportunities to use the new mirror ball.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

A special thank you to Bob Bell who pulled several tables and chairs from the swimming pool during the storm in July and cleaned debris. Also, thank you to Veta Cairns and Linda White who helped clean up broken glass, and John Pellerito who vacuumed the pool deck. The glass tables have been a problem ever since we opened. Each year at least one or more tables end up shattering. The good news is that we have been replacing them with metal top tables and eventually there will be no glass tables to break. Also special thanks to Wayne Whittemore who used his power washer on the clubhouse drive to clean up some grease and oil spills left by our trash hauler a few weeks ago. It looks much better - thanks Wayne!.

Single Friends

Join us for lunch at the Boulevard Bistro in Winghaven on Tuesday, August 21st.

We’ll eat outside on the patio overlooking the lake, weather permitting. If it’s too hot, we’ll sit by the windows. We’ll have time to browse the gift shops - The White Hare and/or the children's (grand) store, Puddle Ducks. The bus will leave at noon. Sign up in the clubhouse and as always, any questions call Pat at 561-1959.

New Residents

Last month when we listed residents that had moved in during the first two years we accidentally left out Jim & Carole Waugh - both very active golfers and card players, Gary & Pat Turner - Gary is a resident rep, a member of the HHR men’s softball team, Pat led our Little Mermaids, Laverne Meyer - bowler and player in Low Roller Poker and other card games, Doris Maulhardt - one of the first to attend our Bingo games and offered many good suggestions, Pat & John Fairhurst - enjoy dances and parties, for several years Pat was responsible for collections and purchases of memorial trees, Carol & Roger Richert - Carol is a member of the Good Times activities committee, the Little Mermaids, Roger enjoys golf, bowling, and poker.

HHR Friday Night Resident Golf

Late in the summer of 2002, shortly after the HHR Golf Course opened, a small group of residents decided to get together and play golf on Friday evenings to develop friendships and socialize. The venue was a game of golf and then sitting on the pro shop patio enjoying snacks and beverages and sharing tales from the past. The tradition continued, snacks turned into potluck dishes and the group continued to grow. In 2007, so many residents had joined in the fun that the patio was too small to accommodate the number of people after golf, so the group moved indoors to the Clubhouse Pool & Card Room. The group continued to grow until it was forced to move into the ballroom area of the Clubhouse. On June 8, 2007, 51 residents played golf and almost 60 residents participated in the social potluck dinner afterwards. With such a large group, we have now split into two tee times because there are not enough golf carts available for our use. The first group starts at 3:30 PM, and the second group starts at 5:30 PM, both groups check in ½ hour prior to playing. All residents are asked to sign up at the pro shop by 12 noon on Friday in the Friday Night Resident Golf Folder. Participation in the social part of the event is limited to players, their spouses or significant other. The restriction is due to the group collecting a small weekly fee from each golfer that is then used for a big “extravaganza” at the end of the golf season. Friday night golf is an excellent time for the novice golfers who want to get acquainted with the game, play variations of golf games intended for fun, and to get to know their neighbors.

The Friday Night Group has a small staff of volunteers who each week see that everything runs smoothly; Larry Knopfel “the Commish” arranges the pairings and decides on the game of the week, Sharon Aubuchon is the CFGO (Chief Financial Golf Officer), Ed & Shirley DeAvilla retain and setup the tableware, plates, and miscellaneous items for the social period, Elaine Voight & Daren Brust are the fund raisers (50/50 Pot), and many other golfers help along the way. When weather does not cooperate and golf is canceled the golf group still meets for the social part in the evening, at these times games like trivia and dead or alive may be played. Recently a silly, simple, easy card game “Pass the Trash” has been the main staple for enjoyment after the food and prizes. Any resident who would like to know more about the Friday Night Golf Group should contact Larry Knopfel, 561-2280.

Report from the Care & Concern Committee

Since organizing on February 21, 2006, our Committee (which has grown to 25 women and men) has been actively involved in many ways with our friends and neighbors. Our records show that for the past one & a half years we have sent over 70 cards to those who have been sick, had surgery, suffered losses of loved ones, and those who needed an extra thoughtful wish. Fifty-five flowers, plants or gifts have been delivered to neighbors at their homes or in the hospital. Food has been taken in to at least 40 families along with those of you not on the committee who also delivered food to your neighbors. We have visited 30 or so people in the community who could not get out or who could benefit from a listening ear during some difficult times. We’ve also visited in the hospital when this is wanted by anyone who is in for a longer stay than usual.

Transportation has been provided by Care & Concern members to a number of residents in emergencies, and other outside options of transportation have been researched for those needing continuing transportation.

Twelve memorial trees have been planted to date. The CCC has contributed $25 toward the cost of each tree to supplement the collections from the community for each tree and plaque.

A “lunch bunch” group has taken various friends for special outings to have a change of scenery and a time to talk about concerns or just small group chatting. These people are not always the same group, but we feel this helps get people involved with others in the neighborhood.

A list of medical supplies is posted on the Resident’s Bulletin Board and many of these items have been borrowed (ramps, wheelchairs, toilet risers, shower seats, walkers, canes, etc.). These are always available for loan and can be delivered to those needing them quickly.

A list of people who are having surgery, who are ill, & who have had deaths in the families is posted on our bulletin board. This information is obtained by those involved to be sure the information is correct and to get an okay for posting. We do not want to invade anyone’s privacy if he or she does not wish to be listed on the board. Any pertinent information is included as to the nature of the situation, requests for prayers, and addresses of where to send cards. This board has been very active this summer & it is a good place to check on neighbors. The number of thank you notes from friends indicates we are taking good care of those in need.

The Committee has had one workshop (CPR Training) and hopes to have more health related workshops in the near future. One idea that is being considered is to have a Weight Watchers Club here at HHR. A representative has been approached and she has indicated that she would come to us for weekly meetings with weigh-ins, and information that Weight Watchers use at other locations.

Our Annual Christmas Tea is enjoyed by many residents and their guests each year. Proceeds are used to pay for flowers/plants/gifts; cards and stamps; memorial trees and plaques; “lunch bunch” and workshops.
Part of our success is from all of you letting us know about those who are in need of care and concern, and another part of our success is the special thoughtful people who are participating on this committee. We welcome any new members, and you will find this a wonderful and rewarding way to be involved. The Committee meetings are open to all residents and your suggestions & input are welcome.

July 14th Ballroom Dance & Demonstration

When Jeanne Brown asked Carl Shackleford, of the St. Louis Ballroom Dancers to demonstrate the meringue, she had no idea she would be part of the demonstration. But she did beautifully as Carl guided her through the steps. 4 couples from the SLBRD demonstrated dozens of various ballroom dances, in addition to a professional couple that performed.
