Shirley Barnes (seen above) is a very special lady. For over 3 years she (with occasional help from hubby Lowell) served as a block captain, distributing sign-up sheets, bulletins, and newsletters. Recently, Shirley decided to give someone else the opportunity to give a little of their time to their community. Effective January 1st Shirley DeAvilla will replace Shirley Barnes and take over her route. In addition to being a block captain Shirley Barnes is on the Caring and Concern Committee, and welcomes every new residents, giving them helpful information as well the forms they need to turn in to the office to get their clubhouse cards, etc. But wait, there’s more - Shirley has also spearheaded the Cup of Christmas Tea event this year and last. She and husband Lowell also organize the annual Holiday Luminaries display. It’s people like Shirley Barnes (and there are quite a few of them) that make Heritage of Hawk Ridge such a wonderful warm caring place to live. We want to thank Shirley (and Lowell) for their giving spirit. We know that she and a lot of other great residents don’t usually like to be in the spotlight, but we think she and the rest of the residents that give of their time and themselves all deserve a big thank you. Sometime in the Spring a dinner will be held for all of our great HHR community service volunteers.

HOLIDAY LUMINARIES
To celebrate and make our holidays more beautiful, participating homeowners place luminaries near the street in front of their home approximately 20’ apart and light them at 4:30-5 p.m. on December 24. The luminary candles burn until they go out (approximately 8-10 hours).

So that our luminaries will be consistent in appearance, glow and burning time, we are using the luminary candles and gallon milk jugs only. Please do not use votive candles. The candles are 50 cents each.

Shirley & Lowell Barnes will have the luminary candles on their front porch starting Dec. 17. Also, the jugs will be on their porch if you need them. (Hopefully, last year’s homeowners still have their luminaries.) There will be a gallon jug for you to leave your money for the candles.

Thanks to everyone who have saved and contributed jugs this year. Please continue to save the gallon milk jugs. Help is needed on this project for the common ground areas. Please call Shirley or Lowell Barnes if you can help. 561-4195.

“SCOUTING FOR FOOD”

What a wonderful showing by the residents of the Heritage of Hawk Ridge in the Scouting for Food Drive conducted the week of November 12-19 2005. Over 472 cans of food were donated and sent to one of the local food pantries for distribution to needy families in the Saint Louis and Saint Charles area.

Many thanks to the block captains who on a very cold (wind chill 19 degrees) and windy day delivered the bags and flyers to the households here at HHR, they were: Steph Hempel, Karen Singleton, Janet Cook, Dave Williams, Dee Snyder, Veta Cairns, Cynthia Roubique, Shirley Barnes, Judy Koehr, and Carol Knopfel.

Thanks also to Bob Bell and Ron Ehrle, who on the following Saturday morning picked up the bags from the porches of residents and deposited them in the foyer of our clubhouse. Jennifer Shaw, Boone Trails District Scout Executive, came by Saturday afternoon and collected the bags and took them off to a local food pantry for distribution to needy families in time for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Once again, thanks to all of the members of this great community, who once again demonstrated their generosity and sharing with others who are not as fortunate as us.

THE ACTIVITY COMMITTEE

We have purchased a set of white china and silverware for clubhouse use only in resident planned, special parties of 40 or more. PLEASE do not use either for small groups (cards, committees, etc.). The dishes and silverware are not for use by non-residents or residents renting rooms for private affairs. Thank you for your cooperation.

KUDOS TO RAY

Many thanks to Ray Alter, the golf course Maintenance Supervisor, who most generously planted and staked the past two memorial trees for us.

After one more tree in the present site, we shall be distributing them to other common ground areas around the community. Not only will we remember our friends, but the beauty of their trees will be long-lasting.

Thank you to all the people who donated to Hope for Will
From Marlene Hughes

HHR Saturday Morning Men’s Golf Group
By Larry Knopfel

On October 29, 2005 the Men’s Saturday Morning Golf group played their final “organized” golf outing for this year. Twenty-two showed up and we played an 18 hole scramble. First place at four under par was won by the team of Bill Norman, Charley Guariglia, Roger Richert, Stu Cassell, and Bob Bell. Golf was followed by a buffet meal prepared by “Chef Chad Zahner” and included pork steaks, chicken, side dishes/chips and cake for dessert. Draught beer left over from the Octoberfest was the drink of the day. Following lunch a variety of prizes and awards were given out; Ray Markham and Roger Richert were recognized for playing the most outings in the league this year, 27, and were each given a box of golf balls. Gary Turner was recognized for being the most improved golfer during the season (2.4 stroke improvement) and was given a golf shirt. Chad Zahner and John Steineger were each given a gift certificate to a local restaurant in recognition of the support they both provided to the golf group throughout the season. The 2006 season will begin in early April and I’m sure all players will be anxious to hit the links again.

Lowell Barnes & Larry Knopfel set up the teams for the men’s last HHR golf outing.
Ray Markham & Roger Richert each won a box of golf balls for participating in the most golf outings during the 2005 golf season.
1st Place: Charley Guariglia, Stu Cassell, Bill Norman, Bob Bell, & Roger Richert—prize presenter Larry Knopfel.
2nd Place: Jerry Stephenson, Avery Womack, John Aubuchon & Dave Williams.
3rd Place: Mac Prince, Jerry Brown, Gary Turner, and Neil Graham.
Gary Turner won a beautiful golf shirt for being recognized as the most improved golfer of the fun 2005 golf season.

Gary Turner also won a prize for being one of the “Closet to the Hole” winners in the last men’s golf outings of the year. It was his lucky day, and a fun event for everyone.
Jerry Stephenson was also one of the many prize winners during the last HHR men’s golf outings. We had unusually mild weather this year and enjoyed a longer golf season. Can’t wait until Spring for more golf!

Please remember that the golf course cart path is not to be used for walking during the hours the golf course is open. At this time of year that is Tuesday - Sunday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. This is a mandate from the HHR Association insurance carrier, and is for your own protection.
