Chuck Wagion Dinner Party
Was Really Fun!

Stephanie Hempel is seen above leading her “students” in one of several line dances that she and her sister Janet Cook have been teaching. Both ladies are residents and have offered the fun classes at no charge to their neighbors. This was just part of the fun we had at the April 16th Chuck Wagon Dinner Party. Around 70 people enjoyed grilled to order steaks, served with potato salad, cole slaw, and pies and brownies for dessert. Then Steph and Janet got the line dancing underway, first inviting their students to participate, then the rest of the party joined in. After that, square dance caller Larry Shipman took over. The dance floor was filled and Larry quickly taught everyone the basic moves and in no time at all we were all dancing, laughing, and getting some great exercise at the same time. Larry, in addition to calling the square dance also sang with many of the songs he played. The event was such a hit we have made arrangements for Larry and some of his fellow square dancers to teach classes at Heritage of Hawk Ridge beginning May 18th. The sign-up sheet is in the clubhouse and the deadline to join is May 11th.

Karen Singleton (above) won our April Fool’s Contest by finding 86 out of 87 intentional mistakes in the Putterings. She won $50 and a soda cooler. This is the 2nd year in a row that Karen has won this contest. Sue Tumbarello & Gene Stiens (below) came in 2nd Place with 55 correctly identified mistakes and won $20 and a soda cooler.

April showers bring May flowers. They also brought many improvements around Heritage of Hawk Ridge. Since our last issue we’ve had 4 new street lights installed in the clubhouse parking lot. The lot is also getting seal-coated and re-striped.

Meanwhile, behind the clubhouse the pool and spa received acid washes, patching and both were repainted. We’ve also had new plants put in around the front of the clubhouse, and the tennis courts got some repairs to help eliminate some of the low spots that collect water. Other interesting things have developed. My wife Mary Rose and I came out and looked at a Villa during April.

It is our intention to purchase a home at HHR so that ultimately we can join our friends in this wonderful community. Initially, we will be using it as a “weekend home”. My responsibilities to my elderly parents will keep us in our primary residence in Creve Coeur for a while, but eventually we will be living out here full time. I have never seen such a great group of caring, fun, warm individuals anywhere.

Hopefully, we’ll be able to transact this and be an even more integral part of the fun life out at Heritage of Hawk Ridge. If you’re new to HHR just sign up for whatever interests you and you’ll be surprise how quickly you’ll make new friends out here. We were all new once, and in most cases you’ll find if you come out of your comfort zone just a little it won’t be long before you feel like you’ve been here forever.

Pinochle Club News

Judy Markham came in first at our pinochle club last month with Jeanette Hage second.

Apologies to the two winners; their scores were not recorded (and probably no one remembers them anyway!)

Anyone wishing to play pinochle once a month can call Carol Richert at 561-6854.

UPDATE ON “TABS” FOR THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE

Several neighbors have asked if I am still collecting tabs to take for recycling for the Ronald McDonald House. The answer is YES!!!! One of the containers was removed from the Pro Shop because the supervisor of the Walter Golf Management did not feel it was appropriate for a service project to be located in the golf area. But there is still a container in the kitchen of the Community Building, and the tabs can be left on my door step at any time. Some of you have already done this, and I appreciate the continuing support for a wonderful cause. The tabs are recycled by the Ronald McDonald House, & in turn the money is used to pay utilities, buy food & supplies, and provide other needs for the families of critically ill children who are living at the facility while their children get the medical attention needed.

I will empty the container frequently and take the tabs to the proper donation areas. Thanks to all of you who are helping to make the stressful days of waiting at hospitals a bit easier for these families by this one simple gesture of saving tabs. Karen Singleton. 52 Tucan Drive.

When Evelyn Austin looked outside her window on her birthday she discovered a small flock of pink flamingos had landed in her front yard. As a joke she put out a box that said, “Deposit Gifts Here.” A short while later she happened to look in the box and someone had left a nice little gift for her. She wasn’t expecting any gifts but wants her anonymous benefactor to know that she appreciates it. It was a nice little surprise and she wanted to thank whoever the kind thoughtful person was that left her a birthday present.

COMBINING 2 FUN THINGS - BOWLING & POKER

Eddie Webber (left ) and the lovely and talented Don Roberts (right) both won with the best poker hands while we were bowling on April 7th. For every strike or spare you got to pick a card and the person with the best hand won the pot. Eddie had 3 aces, Don had 2 pair.

Chuck Wagon Party fun and delicious!

Larry Shipman was our square dance caller at the Chuck Wagon Dinner Party on April 16th. Everyone had a great time learning how to dance, and we have made arrangements for Larry and some of his “angels” to come out to Heritage of Hawk Ridge and offer Square Dance Classes. The classes begin Wednesday May 18th at 7:00 PM and will run every other week.

In addition to the square dancing we had a chef outside grilling steaks. Karen Singleton  picks out a juicy one.

Joe O’Coin won a nifty set of BBQ utensils as a door prize. the party.

Al Schwartz and Ron Milewski  were among several HHR residents who volunteered to help officiate the Bocce Ball event of the 2005 Golden Games.

Pictured here  are some of the competitors.
The weather wasn’t cooperating and rained during the latter part of the competition.
