TO OUR DEAR NEIGHBORS AND FRIENDS

Your support for my dad & our family has been overwhelming. The cards, phone calls, flowers, & prayers have made this difficult time much easier. The concern from all of you is one of the reasons he is continuing to try to get well enough to come home. He still needs more healing time & therapy, but we do see day to day progress. Your calls & cards following Jim’s sister’s death two weeks ago were also a great comfort to us. Thanks so much for being out “extended family”, and for the continued caring. It is appreciated! Our love to all of you.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

The Activities Committee has added a column on the event sign-up sheets titled “clean-up.” This allows the community to utilize an organized approach for cleaning up the clubhouse area after an event. In the past, the last ones to leave always assisted with the clean-up (and we know that the same party animals were always the last to leave). With this approach others can volunteer to take a turn and, as a reward, will not need to check any other food/beverage box. Also, in the future, please meet the deadline for turning in your sheets. It helps so much with the planning (plus, we wouldn’t want Stu to become rich off of our tardiness!!!).

THANKS, The Activities Committee

When we began our “PULL” FOR THE RONALD McDONALD HOUSE program, there were just a few families living in Heritage of Hawk Ridge. Now that many more residents have moved in, some of you may not know that pull tabs from soda cans, beer cans, soup cans, pet food cans, etc. are donated and taken to a collection point to be recycled by the Ronald McDonald House, & in turn, the money is used to pay utilities, buy food & supplies, and provide other needs for the families of critically ill children who are living at the facility while their children get the medical attention needed. Two containers for the pull tabs are located in: 1) the kitchen of the clubhouse and, 2) the Pro Shop. Karen Singleton will empty the containers frequently and take the tabs to the proper donation areas. Thanks to all of you who are helping to make the stressful days of waiting at hospitals a bit easier for these families by this one simple gesture of saving tabs.!

1st Annual Directors Challenge

On September 5th, there was no joy in mudville… at least that’s how Activities Director Stu Cassell felt. His partner, Assistant Director John Pellerito was supposed to be his “ringer” in the Directors Challenge Golf Tournament. As many of you know, Stu holds the course record - for lost balls; 13 in one 9 hole round. John, on the other hand, has shot par on this course. I guess John had an excuse for his game being off - the day before he entered the Lake St. Louis Triathlon. Stu played, well, Stu played like he usually does - nuff said. It was fun though, and plans are already underway for another Directors Challenge next year, so if anyone knows of any great golfers that are looking for a part time job in recreation… just kidding John!

1st Place
Siamese twins joined at the hip Mike Cook & Steve Aubuchon.

2nd Place
John & Eric Winkler, guests.

3rd Place
Future resident Rich Battenburg & current resident Phil Lucido.
New Pro-Shop Grill Manager Chad Zahner put together a delicious BBQ Buffet for the
Directors Challenge.

A reminder to people not playing golf: Use of the golf cart path for walking is prohibited except on Mondays when the course is closed. This is for your protection as well as insurance liability issues

Lots of Winners at the Fall Dance

To get things going Stu announced a “secret dancer” contest. The idea was to ask someone to dance and then find out if they were the secret dancer. Lynn Rogers was the first to win by correctly identifying Stu Cassell as one of the secret dancers. She won an emergency flashlight.

Lynn’s husband Tom was paying attention and deduced that if Stu was the male secret dancer, than perhaps his wife Mary Rose was the female secret dancer. He was correct and won a soda cooler.
Cris Cristea is in pursuit of Paul Stedman (see arrow), during the Spoon Dance. Despite Stu announcing that Paul has never lost a Spoon Dance, he still managed to avoid being eliminated, and his record is still perfect. How does he do it?

3rd Annual Luau - Sept. 11th

Bob Bell has his eye on the pig as it’s being readied for the feast at our 2004 Luau.

Bob Bell and Pat Goddard work their way through the Hawaiian Buffet at the 3rd Annual Heritage of Hawk Ridge Luau (is this really the 3rd one already?). Ellen O’Coin made the arrangements for the roast pig and bbq chicken, and had a small army of volunteers who pitched in on the decorations, food, and entertainment. This is one of our most popular annual events and each year more and more people attend. This year we had over 80 residents and future residents.

Shirley Barnes is so good at doing the hula hoop that the activities committee decided to give her the 1st place award without the usual contest, which she usually wins anyway. She is seen on the left demonstrating how to keep two hula hoops going at once. This must be how she keeps her girlish figure.
Mike Cook stands next to his golf cart that he and wife Janet decorated for the Luau. In addition to the grass skirts and flowers they attached to the cart, they also had a sign that read:
PRINCESS WANNALAYMORE & KING CANTLAYMORE
