HHR HAS THEIR OWN "MAN OF STEEL"
GARTH WAYMAN

He plays 81 games of tennis a week, in addition to 2 or more rounds of golf, several card games, Skip-bo, Mexican Train, and he never misses a deer season. He runs circles around men half his age, so that's why he's our “Man of Steel”. Garth has learned the way to stay young is to keep active. His wife Andree is no slouch either, she's the President of the Ladies Golf League, Co-Chairs the Daytime Bridge Club with her sister Jeanette Hage, was a former Block Captain, and has been the HHR Hospitality Chairperson ever since it's inception. But what do they do in their free time?

From Stu's Desk or Somewhere Near It

We have a magical atmosphere here at Heritage of Hawk Ridge. Magical in the sense that we know how to have fun. As the recreation director I not only plan and help orchestrate parties and events, but I also observe how people interact at them. What I've noticed is that we have an environment that encourages people to just be themselves. The most fun people in life are those that haven't lost the spontaneity and freedom of expression that many of us find dissipating over the years. Let's face it, this thing called “life” isn't an easy gig. It takes a lot out of you, the business of figuring out how you're going to provide for yourself, then for a family, then taking care of that family, including both children and parents. It can take it's toll on you. Yet, I have met so many wonderful people at HHR that seem to have retained the ability to have fun, be silly, and not worry about “what others think”. I hope in some small way I have encouraged that atmosphere; perhaps at times with my own silliness and willingness to take a risk or two in the interest of having fun and entertaining my friends at Heritage. There is a scene in the movie Sixth Sense where the little boy tells Bruce Willis, “I see dead people.” When I'm at a party out here and we're doing a “spoon dance” and I see people laughing and scampering around the dance floor chasing each other, some “hiding” hoping not to be caught, “I see young people.” When we're having a karaoke night, and some one like Joe O'Coin gets up with his cell phone and does a hilarious “Big Bopper” rendition of “Chantilly Lace” I don't see a “senior”, I see a guy with a really young spirit that knows how to have fun. In fact, I rarely see old people at Heritage, and it has nothing to do with chronological age, it has to do with spirit. I'm glad I'm able to share so many good times with such a fun group. Party on!

Stu.

August 25, 2004 LADY HAWKES GOLF LEAGUE NEWS

It is with reluctance that I accept Annie Pick's letter of resignation. Annie was a superb treasurer for one and a half years, and kept the Lady Hawkes finances in perfect order. Her many suggestions to us were always informative and useful. We will surely miss her expertise.

Replacing Annie until the end of the year is Lynn Rogers. Lynn graciously accepted the position of treasurer at the general meeting held on August 25, 2004.

Time to sign in and tee off for the month of September was also voted on and it was decided to continue with the August time of check in: 8:00 am, with a tee off at 8:30 am . We will vote on the time for October at a future meeting.

Sincerely,
Andree Wayman, President

Wacky Golf Tournament full of laughs!

Our Wacky Golf Tournament on August 22nd created a lot of laughs and stories we’ll be telling for years to come. The event required a lot of pre-planning and we want to thank Golf Staff first - John, Ray, Krista, Kamaile, and the rest of the grill staff and grounds crew.

Thanks to John P, Mary Rose, and resident volunteers Marlene Hughes, Veta Cairns, Judy Koehr, and Al Schwartz. If you didn’t participate or get out on the course to watch the festivities, here are some highlights of what you missed:

  • #1 - crazy balls that you had to use to putt. They went every which way but straight, and amazingly Marie Guariglia sunk one.

  • #2 - We moved the hole to the sand trap.

  • #3 - You had to use a driver for all of your shots.

  • #4 - Straight golf with two holes instead of one.

  • #5 - Stakes were placed around the hole.

  • #6 - We had a beautiful statuesque model with hair down to her bottom stationed near the ball washer, offering to “wash your balls?” and do other things to distract our golfers.

  • #7 - some eye candy for the ladies. A shirtless male model who would hit a ball and then you had your choice of using his balls or yours.

  • #8 - This hole had a tiny flag next to it, and inside the hole was a gimmick that made any sunk putt pop right back out of the hole. Stephanie Hempel and Marie Guariglia sunk putts only to see them come back out. I have video of Marie’s shot. Al Schwartz was stationed at this hole to reset the gimmick, as well as to hit an air horn just as people were about to putt.

  • #9 - You had to use a putter for all shots on this hole, and John P. was stationed on the putting green with a remote control B.S. detector that made funny announcements as golfers tried to putt.

I am making a “wacky movie” from the video I shot and will burn it onto a DVD and schedule a happy hour around its “world premiere” once it’s complete. Being a Wacky event the movie will of course be somewhat wacky as I am adding sound effects, music, and titles to spice it up a little. After the initial viewing it will be in our DVD library and available to borrow.

A reminder to people not playing golf: Use of the golf cart path for walking is prohibited except on Mondays when the course is closed. This is for your protection as well as insurance liability issues

Putting on the Ritz Dinner Party Photos

Laverne Meyer and Judy Markham are seen preparing their tacos and enchiladas at the Mexican Buffet we set up at the Putting on the Ritz Dinner Show Party. Residents “rolled their own” with seasoned ground beef and chicken, yellow rice, refried beans, and melted cheese and chili for nachos. 74 people attended this fun event, and had an assortment of pies and cakes to select from for dessert. Krista served margaritas, beer, and wine. In the past we've served White Castles at this annual dinner party, but this year we decided to try something different. Stu & Mary Rose Cassell & Krista prepared the food.

After dinner our guests were treated to a “Vegas” style show. Our headliner for the evening was Dean Christopher who entertained us with wonderful impressions of Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and a little Jerry Lewis tossed in for good measure. He imitated their voices, sung their songs, and did an extremely credible Dean Martin, including much of his funny schtick.

In character as Elvis Presley, Dean Christopher worked the room, stopping to flirt and sing to the ladies. Carole Waugh looks like she's enjoying the attention. Note the locking hands around Dean's waist. The show was fantastic, and everyone raved about how funny Dean is and what a great singer he is, both while doing impressions and singing songs as himself. It was a terrific show and we all hope to have Dean back again soon.

Karaoke Night - August 21

Gary McCullough, Joe O'Coin, Vince Koehr, Don Roberts, & Tom Rogers combine forces to belt out a tune or two. Bravo! Encore! Encore!

Not to be outdone by the guys, Mary Rose, Lynn Rogers, Ellen O'Coin, Judy Koehr, & Marilyn Milewski perform for over 40 people in attendance.
Ron Milewski steps to the plate this time with Vince Koehr, Joe O'Coin, and the always dapper Tom Rogers. We drank enough so they sounded great!
