Whoa Baby!
More News From the Bunker! The grass is growing again!
Happens every year. Great to see the golf season starting up again. I
like the winters in St. Louis, it¹s just that they are about two or three
months too long.
Distance Markers 101
Each T box has a metal plate indicating the distance to
the center of the green, red for the ladies (forward T is more PC), while
white and blue are used for the middle and back T boxes, respectively.
When I placed the plates in the ground, I used three different laser
devices to determine the distance. I compared these to the architectural
drawings for the course and found them to be very close. Well, my
daughters chipped in and bought me a GPST ( global positioning system
thingy) as a Christmas gift, so I thought I¹d use it to check the
distances, as well. According to the GPS readings the laser measurements
were fairly accurate, all agreeing within one to three yards, for the 6 or
7 I randomly checked. So I think the course is fairly well marked.
In addition to the distance written in large black
numbers on the metal plates there are also two smaller numbers. On the #5
white marker, for example there are three numbers, 151 in the center of
the plate, +6 at the top of the plate and -6 at the bottom of the plate.
This means it is 151 yards from the metal plate to the center of the
green (white flag used), 157 yards to a typical back of the green flag
position (blue flag used) and 145 yards to a typical front of the green
flag position (red flag). This system works out fairly well for this
course excepting for the ladies T on number 6. The T box is so far off to
the side that only the distance to the center of the green has much
meaning, but even that can be pretty far off, if the white flag is way to
the right or left. Use your best judgment for distance on this T box.
Since I had the GPS device with me I decided to drive the
cart path to see exactly what that distance was. So, for our walkers and
joggers, this is 1.52 miles.
Speaking of distance, Kathy & I have purchased a new home
that is too far a drive for me to commute to Hawks Ridge any longer. The
1400 mile trip from Sun Lakes, Arizona is just too much. So this is my
last News From the Bunker. I¹ve enjoyed getting to know some of the
residents here and will remember my time spent here fondly.
Best Regards and Best Wishes, Al Wagner

Our special
thanks to Judy Markham, who volunteered to sell 50/50 Raffle tickets
at the St. Pat’s Dance. Half of the $90 collected was given as a
prize, and the other half of the prize money was donated to the St.
Joseph’s Home for Wayward Beagles.
Seen above, Judy is dancing with Ray, the guys she’s lived with for lo
these many years. Few people realize that Ray plays the gazinter, as
well as being an accomplished dancer. He regaled us with an Irish Reel
at the St. Pat’s Dinner Dance. |

Georgy Rock
Rocks!
At our Blue Jean Concert on Feb. 28th Georgy Rock and Mr. Dill (who
was named after a pickle) performed jazz and blues songs. Bob Dill
played 8 different instruments, and performed with his own
pre-recorded sound tracks. We found out that Georgy Rock is the
daughter of George Rock who used to be in the Spike Lee Band, and who
recorded “All I want for Chanukah is a condo in Miami.” In addition to
singing Georgy read us a bed time story by John Lithglow

Lucky John Hunt
is about to roll a strike in the “mystery frame” that won him a free
lunch during our golf outing on March 11th. John has won a free lunch
twice before, and at that time he had to bowl 3 strikes in a row to
win. Congrats! |

Jeanne Brown and
the “Glee Club” perform several Irish songs at the St. Pat’s dinner
dance, and then we had an audience sing-a-long. From left to right are
- Front row: Laverne Meyers, Ellen O’Coin, Pat Roberts, Steph Hempel.
Back row: Tom Gil, Gary McCullough, Jennifer Lopez, Annie Pick, Gayle
Cattau, and Don Roberts. Our chorus did a beautiful job of singing and
it’s really great having them perform at parties. They only had about
2 weeks notice to prepare and they did great. After the dance was over
several members of the Glee Club were in the lobby to sign autographs
and sell their new cd: “It Feels Like Arthritis, But It’s Just My
Spouse.” A world tour of Wentzville, O’Fallon, and New Melle is
planned for the Spring. |
