St. Louis Harmony Chorus - Performing at HHR

The fun began early in the month with a Ginger Bread House Workshop organized by Leslie Kaiser. Then our two trees were decorated at a resident Pot Luck Tree Trimming Dinner. Another Leslie Kaiser event was the “Cup of Christmas Tea.” Then a group of residents went to Mexico, Mo to see “A Christmas Carol.” This was followed by the wonderful Ambassadors of Harmony Christmas Show, and a resident Progressive Dinner. The December festivities were topped with a Christmas Concert by the St. Louis Harmony Chorus, and sing-a-long.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH!

Pat Goddard’s
CRACKER COOKIES
Presented at:
A Cup of Christmas Tea
December 7, 2003

Line an 11x17 edged cookie sheet with non-stick foil. Arrange saltine crackers on it. Boil together: 1 cup butter
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar … for about 3 minutes

Pour and spread this syrup over crackers and bake at 400 degrees for 5 minutes. Remove from oven. Sprinkle 12 oz bag of mini chocolate chips over the crackers. When melted, spread chocolate evenly over crackers and score lightly for cutting after the chocolate sets. Cut cookies just as soon as chocolate is set (Pat puts the sheet in the refrigerator to hasten the process). Remove to air tight container between layers of wax paper. Store them in the fridge.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU

For the second year in a row, our residents donated wrapped gifts for the children of incarcerated parents through the Living Lord Luthern Church of Lake St. Louis. We received a thank you letter from Merle Neustadt of the Living Lord Care Ministry for the 31 wrapped gifts our residents gave to the children. This effort was organized by Lynda Schwartz, with help this year from Annie Pick and Al Schwartz. The gifts for the children came from residents of a variety of religious backgrounds, showing that when it comes to bringing some joy into the hearts of the little ones, there are certain universals that everyone can relate to and respond. Thank you to all who organized this wonderful charitable gift drive and to all who donated presents to the children.

From Stu’s Desk or somewhere near it .

December was a very special month for me. I had the opportunity to enjoy several resident organized activities as a “guest”, rather than the person responsible for everything. It started with the resident Progressive Dinner on December 14th. Stephanie Hempel had invited my wife Mary Rose and myself to participate in the second of these great dinners. We began our evening at the Singleton home, where we enjoyed a variety of delicious appetizers and drinks. Then we joined everyone else at the clubhouse for turkey and pork. Mary Rose made a green bean casserole and many other residents brought side dishes as well. It was the first time in nearly two years that I attended an event strictly as a guest, not as the recreation director. It felt odd, and I found myself still in “organizer mode”, walking through the clubhouse in my usual rushed fashion, until Bob Bell grabbed me, and said, “Slow down Stu, you’re not working tonight.” He was absolutely right, so I told myself just to relax and enjoy the evening. The food was delicious and I have to give the resident organizers kudos' for putting together such a fun detail oriented event, that went off without a hitch. After some prize give-aways, Mary Rose and I went to Stephanie and Bob’s house for dessert and drinks. We had a wonderful evening and I thank everyone for including us. The following Thursday I was also extended an invitation to attend the Ladies Bridge Luncheon. I was the only guy there and it fed right into my “harem fantasies”. Seriously though, it was also a fun event. All of the ladies brought different things to add to the salad, and there were also delicious desserts. For all of these events there were dozens of people behind the scenes doing a variety of tasks to make them the great successes that they were. I was very happy to be able to share in the fun.

Thanks everyone!

Stu

The Evening Bridge group has started “Slam Pots”. Each member of the group puts in $.25 in the small slam pot and $.50 into the grand slam pot every time we meet. When a bridge pair bids and makes a slam, either small or grand, they split whatever is in the respective slam pot.

Carole and Jim Waugh were partners on Dec. 9th, and bid and made a small slam on the first night we had pots. They split $3.00.

If you are interested in playing bridge, be sure to call either Andree Wayman at 625-2225 or Jeanette Hage at 625-0655. They are always looking for regulars to complete another table, and subs. Both men and women are welcome. The Daytime Bridge is played on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at 12:30 pm, the Nighttime Bridge is played on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm.

There’s nothing more relaxing
than a fun round of golf.

The Pro-Shop Grill and Golf Course are now open from
8:00 AM to 5:00 PM - Tuesday - Sunday
Closed on Mondays.

Leah Kinsey, Jerry Klinke & Bob Clark are there to serve you.
For Tee-Times call: 625-3836

Attention Golfers!
If you hear an air horn while on the course then please come in. Bob, Jerry, or Al will signal if it is unsafe to stay on the course if weather conditions warrant it.

Happy New Year!  Before retiring I taught school and had the opportunity for a fresh start with new ideas every August.  Now I look forward to each Spring warm-up when again, I have an opportunity for a new start, but maybe in March or April, rather than August.  But that looms somewhat in the future. For now, I face January with the rest of you.  I will not face January here, however, but have decided to spend some time with daughters in Phoenix and Salt Lake City.  I will not be at the course for the month of January and Derek will not be here in January or February.  Therefore, we will be unable to pick up used Christmas trees after December 29, or 30.  My boss, Jeff McDonald, who works at The Links of Dardenne Golf Course, will be stopping by to keep an eye on things. Out on the course, we¹ve pulled the Tee Markers for the year as it is difficult to move them if the ground is frozen.  If you find yourself playing these Winter months, please tee the ball up in an unworn and dry area of the tee box. Derek has been spending some time creating cover for the fish and we are both looking forward to the fishing season to see how our efforts pay off.  It may take a year or more to create a really good fishing environment.

And finally here’s another treat - a poem!

A Poem by Derek, Al, and Brenda Lee

We’re sorry, So sorry,
Please accept our apologies,
But we were too blind,
We were too blind too see
We’re sorry for getting fertilizer in your back yard when you didn’t want it there.
We’re sorry for not getting fertilizer in your back yard when you wanted it there.
We’re sorry for getting water in your yard when you didn’t want it there.
We’re sorry for not getting water in your yard when you wanted it there.
We’re sorry for cutting your phone wires.
We’re sorry for pummeling your house with water.
We’re sorry for waking you with our noisy machinery in the morning.

And I’m sorry I started wring this poem, so I think I’ll sign off. - Happy New Year to All

Al Wagner
