THEY MADE US AN OFFER
WE COULDN'T REFUSE

Believe it or not, that attractive woman and handsome gentleman above are really Mary Austin and her mother-in-law Evelyn. The “offer” we’re referring to in the headline was for their help in decorating the clubhouse for our Halloween Roaring 20’s Party. The two ladies created stunning displays in the lobby, as well as making a beautiful display on two banquet tables in the grand ballroom, with a beautiful rented champagne fountain in the middle. But in addition to that they decorated all of the tables we sat at during the party and really created an old time atmosphere with laminated period clippings and jokes, beer bottles, fake money, and mason jars. When Evelyn first arrived at the party, few people realized it wasn’t a real man! It was only when she started talking that we made the startling revelation that it was actually Evelyn Austin, and not some dapper gentleman that we hadn’t met before. Many residents came dressed as flappers and gangsters and showed a lot of creativity and imagination in their costumes.

SOME OF THE HARVEST HOME
DANCE WINNERS!

Andree Wayman won a giant Hershey Kiss by being the “secret dancer” at the Harvest Home Dance, and Bob Bell won a box of golf balls by discovering her. Later Bob became our first 50/50 raffle winner.

John Hunt won 7 lbs of candy mints when his completed dance card was picked.

Jim Singleton won some liquor filled chocolates by playing our “Spot the Silly Sign” game. He saw the one that said: “The closets and bathrooms are down the hall to the left - if you’re confused about which is which, please see Stu before you use either of them.”

Karen Singleton won 5 lbs of baked beans when she discovered Jerry Brown, another “secret dancer.” Jerry won a free lunch at the Pro-shop.

Judy Markham won some Jack Daniels chocolates when she spotted the sign in the ladies restroom that said: “For a good time, call Bob Bell”(with his real cell phone number) Stu joked “that sign Bob put up, not me!” Bob was hoping Stu would leave the sign up after the party and was expecting some phone calls Sunday.

Bob Heuay won a giant jar of cheese balls when his completed dance card was picked. Yummm!

HAWK RIDGE HOLY ROLLERS

Karen Singleton, Laverne Meyer, Martha Nolter, Bob Heuay, Mary Balestri, and John Hunt went on our bowling and lunch outing on November 13th. Mary,  seen here, won a free lunch at Joe’s Crab Shack by being the first one to get 3 strikes in a row. She rolled a 179 in her second game. Bob, one of our lunch winners in October had 8 spares and 3 strikes. Laverne had 5 spares in the first game, 3 strikes and 4 spares in the second game, and a high game of 157. John nearly won lunch with a double in the 9th and 10th frames of the first game. He also had another double in the 10th frame of the second game. Karen rolled 10 spares and 3 strikes. Martha had spares in every game and a spare and a strike in the 10th frame of the third game.

After giving the excuse that he was going to bowl lousy because he didn’t sleep the night before, had the “heartbreak of psoriasis”, and was wearing new bowling shoes, activities director Stu Cassell started his second game with a strike, then an open frame, then a spare, and then proved you can not only walk in your sleep, but you can bowl in your sleep as well - he rolled 9 strikes in a row for a 258 game. After that, everyone said they were going to stay up late the night before the next bowling event. They wouldn’t commit to buying new shoes though, or claiming to have the “heartbreak of psoriasis.”

After lunch the gang met Marlene Hughes at Joe’s Crab Shack for some delicious seafood. Everyone wanted to invite more people to join us each month for our bowling outing. You can be a raw beginner, or an old pro, doesn’t matter. We don’t care about scores - we’re all just there to have fun. Even if you don’t bowl, come join us to cheer us on, and for lunch afterwards. Congratulations again to Mary for her “turkey”.

Andree’s the Name, and Hospitality’s the Game!
Andree Wayman has served as our Hospitality Chairperson since its inception. Andree contacts new residents and gives them their move in packets which include all kinds of helpful information about HHR. In addition, she sends cards to those who are ill, and to the families of our dearly departed. If you know of someone in the community that is ill or undergoing a medical procedure, please call Andree at 625-2225 so she can send a card. Thank you Andree for doing such a great job with your various responsibilities.

More Notes from the Bunker
Click on image for larger version in a new window.

Well here's something different - a test.  Match each term or phrase with a hole number from the HHR golf course.  Get all nine correct and you¹re ready for the tour!  Answers below.

A) Most ball marks
B) Lights
C) Most geese on green
D) No bunkers
E) Marsh Lands
F) Grasshopper Alley
G) Most dogwood berries (they're red)
H) Beer is near
I) Splashdown

Derek & I will try to manage the lake and pond for quality fishing.  One thing that is needed is shelter for the young fish.  A good source is used Christmas Trees.  If you have a live tree and would like to donate it at the end of the season give us a call at  636-625-3186.  We¹ll pick up the tree from your front or backyard and use it to create some hiding places.   The heavy rain on the night of the 17th filled the lake more than we¹ve seen before.  4.2 inches of rain were in the gauge on Tuesday morning. Straw, leaves, twigs, and other pieces of debris slowed the flow from the grate by the dam, but the course did not suffer any permanent damage, just some clean up work.  Two bunkers filled with water and the cart paths at #6 and # 8 tees were under water as well as the nature trail by the lake and # 9 tee. Hope you were able to enjoy the course with the exceptionally nice weather on the following days.

Leah Kinsey, seen on the left striking a silly pose at the Nov. 13th Happy Hour, is much more to us than just the Pro-Shop/Grill Manager. She’s a gifted artist, and can belt out a tune with the best of them, as proved at our Karaoke nights. John Pellerito, Stu’s new assistant, is not only a hard worker with a great sense of humor, but he’s also an athlete. He’s a pretty fair golfer, and enjoys playing soccer. He has two daughters, and lives in Lake St. Louis with his lovely wife.

First HHR Men’s Pancake and Sausage Breakfast
Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003.

Leah Kinsey, our Pro-Shop manager, and number one grill lady is seen here on the right making pancakes for 19 of the guys and their guests. John Nocton, (Pat Turner’s father), seen here on the left,  is joined by Gary McCullough, Maury Singleton, and his father Jim. The men are helping themselves to the sausages and pancakes which were served with hot coffee and orange juice. Other men that enjoyed the “men only” breakfast were Don Roberts, Roger Richert, Jim Waugh, John Hunt, Paul Stedman, Ray Markham, Leal Stewart, Gary Turner, Fred McGavran, Bob Heuay, Al Schwartz, Dave Williams, Garth Wayman, Jerry Brown, Phil Lucido, and his son Phil. Activities Director Stu Cassell encouraged the men to come up with other ideas for activities the guys could do together. Among the suggestions offered at the breakfast were 1) attending an Otters Hockey Game and 2) a trip to one of the East side night time entertainment venues (Of course a trip to the East side would be for research purposes only).

Heritage Explorers

Our Questors Chapter is the first chartered organization to be formed at Missouri’s premiere “55 or better” Community in Lake St. Louis. The name is inspired by the many famous explorers such as Daniel Boone, Meriweather Lewis and William Clark, who played dominant roles in the history of St. Charles County. Questors are part of an international organization of people who enjoy delving into things in the past in a variety of interesting areas.
In June Pat Goddard hosted an informational luncheon that attracted the interest of enough residents to form the Heritage Explorers. They recently elected Nancy Withey as their president, and hope as our community grows there will be interest to form additional chapters. Their first official meeting will be Jan. 20, 2004.

THANK YOU BARBARA HUNT

Our thanks to Barbara Hunt, who answered our call for volunteers to sell 50/50 raffle tickets at the Harvest Home Dance. She did an excellent job of explaining what we were collecting for (to raise money to purchase a defibrillator for the clubhouse) as well as selling the tickets. That was our first 50/50 raffle and we will be having others, and different types of fundraising events. Our goal is to collect at least $2,000 for this life saving device. We need MORE VOLUNTEERS! All it takes is about 15 minutes at each event. Thank you also to Pat Roberts who made a really cool poster that will show our running collection totals. If you would like to help us with this, contact Stu at the clubhouse.
