On the 9th hole of the August 10, 2003 Golf Scramble here at Heritage of Hawk Ridge, Lowell Barnes, sunk a hole in one! Lowell said it was the second time in his life that he had done that. Lowell is seen above
holding the ball with the 9th green in the background. This was the first time that anyone sunk a hole in one during a scramble at HHR, but we’re sure they’ll be others. Congratulations Lowell.

Poker Anyone?

Poker Anyone? The HHR “Poker Anonymous” group held its first meeting in early July. Those attending were Bob Bell, Bob Scofield, Ray Markham, Jim Waugh, Gayle Cattau, Jerry Brown, Fred Uhle, and Lowell Barnes. This group of distinguished players enjoyed their first meeting. We are not sure who the winner was, but they had fun. They are looking for a “few good men and women to join the group so we can “teach you” or you can come and watch. If you enjoy watching golf, this is probably faster paced and at least as exciting. Meetings are held every first and third Tuesday of the month from 7:00 to 10:00 pm at the clubhouse.

If you come on the second and fourth Tuesday and see players playing bridge, then you know you are in the right place but the wrong time for poker.
Bob Bell

For more information, call our poker chairman, Bob Bell at 636-561-4016

Come see or play in the HHR World of Poker Tournament at 7:00 PM Sept. 30th in the clubhouse. B.Y.O.B. welcome.

From Stu's Desk or somewhere near it!

We now have over 100 residents living at Heritage of Hawk Ridge, and I think we have an exceptional community. In addition to what I have put on the schedule, many residents are taking the initiative and organizing and planning activities of their own.

When we first opened the clubhouse 17 months ago I tried to fill every single day with activities. In the beginning all the activity at HHR centered around the events I put on the schedule. But after a while residents formed clubs and groups such as the day and evening bridge clubs, the ladies and men’s golf league, several tennis groups, the book of the month club, the poker club, and most recently the HHR Little Mermaids Water Ballet to name a few. In addition, residents have organized bus trips to movies and lunches, ball games, and book signings. Now I leave a few gaps in the monthly calendar to allow folks a chance to do things with their neighbors that don’t conflict with the schedule. I realize that even with as many different things going on as we have, there may be a few shy people who may be hesitant about joining in on the fun. To those people I would say that your neighbors are by and large very friendly, and they were all once the “new guys” too.

While friendships have quickly formed at HHR, I think it’s safe to say we really don’t have “cliques” here. Everyone is warmly greeted, especially new folks, and it doesn’t take long before people are calling you by your first name and you feel comfortable in your new neighborhood. To our more established residents I ask you to reach out to your new neighbors and introduce yourselves. Tell them a little about what goes on here, and encourage them to try some of the activities. Some times it just takes a little help from a friendly neighbor to get started in a new community.

There’s nothing more relaxing
than a fun round of golf.

Odds and Ends from the Bunker

Chapter One - Height of Cut
A few of you have commented about mowing at a lower height  so as to allow for easier location of balls that don't quite make it to the green.  We¹ve actually lowered the height of cut this year slightly, and  try to mow the surrounds ( the area surrounding the green) every Tuesday and Friday.  So--- you'll find the lowest cut grass on those days if you can make it to within 40 or 50 feet  of the green. The remainder of the rough is mowed once a week or as needed.  We can¹t mow any lower with the equipment we have, and still maintain healthy turf.

Chapter Two - Practice, Practice, Practice
The course is closed on Mondays but this allows an opportunity for some practice since golfers are not around.  If you'd like to practice hitting from bunkers (sand traps) you may use the bunkers at # 9 or #4 on Mondays.  Please hit from one end of the bunker to the other and DO NOT hit onto the surface of the green.

If you'd like to practice chipping you may use the tees at # 9 or  #4.  Please chip from either the blue tees or the red tees and avoid the white tee boxes as they see considerable wear during the week. If your skills are weak, please do not chip toward any home sites!

Also remember not to target my staff members or me if we are working nearby.

Do not to play the hole and use only the tees for chipping and the bunkers for working on your sand wedge.  The practice green is always available for  putting practice, but we do not mow greens on Mondays, so the  roll of the ball may be a bit slower.

Karen Singleton was a good sport when she picked the biggest box on the prize cart at the Putting on the Ritz Dance and it turned out to be a small bottle of Pepto Bismol. She won the prize for discovering the “secret dancer,” Paul Stedman.

Later, she won a free 2004 annual Golf Membership in a drawing of completed dance cards. That’s the largest prize ever won at HHR.

The trip to Kimmswick, Mo was fun. When I asked the group to pose for a quick photo at lunch, I looked into my view finder and was caught by surprise to discover that everyone had their face covered with menus! After a delicious lunch at the Blue Owl Restaurant we browsed the shops.

Check out Paul Stedman’s eyes - he looks like he’s thinking, “Oh my God, this might make my wife Peggy expect me to do some yard work!” Paul won a gardening kit by being the “secret dancer” at the Putting on the Ritz dance. On his way up to collect his prize, Paul proudly shared his collection of “Italian Hand Gestures” with the audience, and oddly enough the group had some of their own to share with Paul. Later, Paul also won a mini M&M dispenser and 4 bottles of mini M & M’s. Both the “secret dancer” and the person dancing with them and asking them if they are the “secret dancer” win prizes at our dances.

Pat Roberts, Roger Richert, Evelyn Austin, Georgia Saucier, Jim & Karen Singleton enjoy the White Castle Buffet at the Putting on the Ritz Dinner Party August 16th.
