Don and Pat Roberts are Winners!

At the “Heat of the Night” dance, July 19th, there Don Robertswere 3 different ways people could win prizes. We had a “secret dancer” and all you had to do was dance with her and ask her if she was the secret dancer to win. Steph Hempel and a non-resident partner won that contest. Then we had the Spoon Dance, and 3 more couples won prizes. Lastly, on the dance cards at each table we directed people to ask at least 5 people other than the person they came with to dance. For fun, we told everyone they had to ask for the dance with a fake accent. Dave Williams asked Mary Rose Cassell to dance, speaking French. The dance cards had 5 slots. Once you danced with 5 people then you put the card into a bin for a drawing. Winners were drawn from a guest bin Pat Robertsand a resident bin. For the first resident winner, Bob Bell, Stu played a “Let's Make A Deal” game where he offered a mysterious envelope, cash, any of the wrapped prizes on his gift cart, or what was behind “the Curtain.” Bob picked the curtain and wouldn't trade it for anything. It was a wise choice because he won the top prize of the evening, a cd player system with speakers. Stu drew another 6 completed dance cards and let the winners choose from the prize cart. Above Don Roberts is seen with the oversized beach towel he won, and his wife Pat shows off the Hulk bubble bath she won. She said “one of her grandchildren will just love it.” The Roberts were among over a dozen participants to win prizes.

About 60 people attended the dance party, and music was provided by the Mike Szwedo Quintet, who performed at the Grand Opening party. Stu ran the contests during each of the band's breaks so the fun was non-stop.

The admission price included carrot and German chocolate cakes, popcorn, a veggie tray, an assortment of chocolate candies, and soda. There was a beer and wine cash bar, but like our other dances, residents had the option of bringing their own alcohol. The next dance will be a dinner dance with an “all you can eat” White Castle Buffet, featuring the band “3rd Degree”. It should be lots of fun!

DEAR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS,

I can't thank you all enough for helping me through the last 2 months of my recovery from back surgery. I would have never believed we could move into a community for less than a year and experience the outpouring of love, support, and encouragement I received, to say nothing of the gifts, food, prayers and cards and especially the visits daily which did so much to pass the days flat on my back. It just reaffirms what Rog and I have said from day one. This is the best move we've ever made and you all are such a big part of our happiness here.

Thanks again,
Carol Richert

From Stu's Desk or somewhere near it!

This month I turn 55, no longer a “baby senior”, but the real thing. As if to prove it, I passed a kidney stone 45 minutes before our last dance party began. I had been carrying it for 3 weeks, thinking, how unkind life can be. I mean I started out short. Then at 30 I said goodbye to my hair. At 40 I realized in 10 years I put on 4 inches on my waist. By 50 I grew all my hair back - except that it was now distributed in various places on my body like my ears, my back, etc.

Weeks before my 55th birthday I looked in the mirror and saw that my once jet black beard was now predominately grey. I did a roll call of every body part that hurt each morning, and decided, “Okay, I'm ready for the home.” But then something wondrous happened. I went bowling with my 18 year old. 18 - what an age. Everything is still fresh, new, and unwrinkled. It was my son Ben's birthday. He loves to bowl, and is quite good at it. This year we joined a league together and although he had never bowled regularly before, he ended up with a 170 average, and the league's high game of 249. I on the other hand was pleased I managed to have a 160 average. It had been 25 years since I had bowled in a league (with my father).

So, here we were bowling, and as always Ben was pontificating, predicting a massive victory over me that would establish his dominance once and for all in this arena. The first game Ben was off and rolled a 126. I bowled a 197. The second game Ben bowled a 224 - but the “old man” rolled a 226. During the 3rd game I heard the sound track from “The Natural” in my head - something larger than life was happening, and it was so unreal it didn't sink in until it was over. I threw a strike in the first two frames, picked up a baby split for a spare in the third frame, then rolled 8 strikes in a row, and a 9 count. I ended up with 277 and a 3 game series total of 700!!!!! I had no idea I could do something like that, especially at this stage of my life. I guess the lesson here is that just because we grow older and change physically it doesn't mean life is over, or even that the quality of life is diminished.

I guess we're meant to just hang in there, enjoy each moment, and savor those special days when the 18 year olds have to acknowledge “we still have it.” (Now if I can just beat Mike Cook in ping pong!).

Water 101 -

The golf course uses water from the large ( 4 to 5 acre) lake,  driven by three pumps in our pump house located next to the maintenance building.  You may notice the water level drops significantly in hot dry spells due to our use and evaporation.  When the level gets too low, and the lake does not look aesthetically pleasing, or if we are running low on water we can refill the lake with well water. It takes 48 hours, or more,  to bring the level back up, pumping about 600 gallons per minute!   A heavy rain can refill the lake overnight, as there are four drains from our community that drain into the lake. The upper lake drains into the larger lake as well. Dozens of drains from the golf course also empty into the lake.  Most of the holes are designed to return runoff to the lakes, an ecologically sound effort to conserve water.

The sprinkler heads that distribute water to the course supply water at about  50 gallons per minute and about  60 psi.  There is some danger for young children on the course.  If a sprinkler head comes on unexpectedly, or if they are allowed to play in the water from a sprinkler they may come in contact with very high pressure water which could damage an eye or an ear, for example.  So please do not allow unsupervised children on the course.  Most of the watering is done at night, but frequently daytime watering is necessary.  During hot summer afternoons the greens will water automatically for four minutes at the beginning of each hour.  This serves to cool the greens.
We do the best we can to provide golfers with a dry course, but some times it simply is not possible.  We also try our best to prevent water from the course entering the backyards of those who live on the course perimeter.  Wind changes, and an occasional malfunctioning sprinkler head may cause golf course water to enter some yards, however.

In terms of protecting the course, we want to remind everyone that the carts should only be driven on the paths. There should only be foot traffic on the common areas. Lastly, thanks to everyone who's been fixing ball holes on the greens. It really helps.

Know a good contractor, handyman, masseuse, computer guru, or restaurant that delivers to HHR? We are putting together a directory so please submit your resource. It can be virtually any goods, services, or what-have-you . Share your info with your neighbors. As soon as we have enough leads, we’ll publish a guide that will be available to everyone. Thanks to Ray Markham for this great idea.
