Dave Williams -
A Man of Many Talents

Dave Williams is seen here with 2 of his paintings, standing next to art instructor Virginia Dragschultz during our first annual Heritage of Hawk Ridge Art Show, on June 14, 2003. The show featured the work of 16 local artists, as well as an exhibit of residents’art.Virginia, who is
the president of the St. Charles Artists Guild has taught painting, clay sculptor, glass painting, and mixed media will be teaching ceramic jewelry making in July, as well as offering the mixed media option to her students. The first art show was well attended and we hope to make this an annual event. Dave Williams is proving to be our resident “Renaissance Man” - he sings, he dances, he paints, and has won golf trophies in HHR tournaments!.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

When you’re done outside by the pool, can you please close the umbrellas? The reason is that it often gets very windy on the pool deck, and a couple of times some tables have ended up in the pool. By closing the umbrellas you lessen the chances of that happening. Also, if you move any furniture inside or out, or close any doors, can you restore them to their original positions when you’re ready to leave? Your help and cooperation is greatly appreciated in keeping the amenities nice and looking good.

Questors Luncheon

Questors Luncheon a hit! Residents Sandra Heuay, Andree Wayman, and Karen Singleton, are seen visiting with one of the guests from the  Questors. Pat Goddard organized this wonderful luncheon to introduce the Questors to HHR.

Tables were set up with various displays, and a complimentary boxed lunch was served along with wine.

Either Don Roberts is extremely pleased with his lunch, or smiling over the fact that he was the only man in a room full of lovely ladies during the Questors Luncheon.

Either way, he looks very happy.

From Stu's Desk or somewhere near it!

On June 12th, exactly 3 months to the day he went in, my father was released from the hospital and returned home in time to celebrate his 86th birthday which also fell on Father’s Day this year. During the time he was hospitalized our family was called twice to “say goodbye” to him. The doctors were sure he was about to die, but fortunately they didn’t tell him that. He went in to replace a hip, and subsequently had two heart attacks that necessitated emergency open heart surgery to replace a valve and to do a double by-pass. For much of the first month my father was heavily sedated, and didn’t always recognize me or remember why he was in the hospital. As I said at the Comedy Show, for a couple days I tried to convince him he was a war hero who had just come back from Iraq. He also thought he had died. I told him he nearly did and asked him if he remembered floating towards a bright light at the end of a dark tunnel. He said he hadn’t. I shared with him my “near death” experience. It was shortly after wife #2 announced she was leaving me to be with a man she had met on the Internet (truth). Prior to learning my marriage was ending I had purchased tickets to see Phantom of the Opera for us and another couple. I didn’t have anyone else to take so I went with my future ex-wife. After the play we went back to the other couple’s home and they invited us to join them in their hot tub. It was August, 100% humidity and about 95 degrees. I normally don’t drink, but had 2-3 glasses of wine before entering the hot tub. I was in it about 15 minutes when I suddenly felt faint and got up to leave. I said, “I don’t feel well” and then passed out. My hosts quickly got me out of the hot tub and placed me on a chaise lounge and got a wet compress for my head. I remember seeing a long dark tunnel with a bright light at the end of it. I started drifting towards the light, when I began to hear a tiny voice call to me: “Go back, go back Stu - it’s not you time… besides, your ex-wife
is still on your insurance policy”. I knew I had to go back and turned away from the light. What’s that saying - “the light at the end of the tunnel may be a train!”… Anyway, I came back - I knew my father had “come back” the day he told me, “a young nurse bathed me today, and I mean she washed EVERYTHING!” He put extra emphasis on EVERYTHING! That was the highlight of his day (it would have been mine too). My father was very touched the day I showed him your card and told him how so many people were praying for him. Thank you all for helping me get through an extremely stressful time in my life.

Gayle & Chris Cattau win Father’s Day Golf Scramble

Our 1st Place winners in the June 15th Golf Tournament. We had our largest turn-out for this fun event, 40 people, and everyone had a great time. Afterwards, Leah and Linda served a delicious BBQ buffet that everyone enjoyed. Our next Golf Scramble is scheduled for July 6th, and will be a 4 person team competition.

Father's Day Golf Scramble

Annie Pick, Karen Singleton, Roger Richert, and Jim Singleton pose for a quick picture during the Father’s Day Golf Scramble. They caught Stu video taping golfers on the 6th hole with plans to blackmail them later.

From the Bunker
After months (years?) of miss hits, slices, shanks, hooks, etcetera, you reach into your golf bag at #3 and pull out your 9 iron, carefully tee up the ball and give it your perfectly executed smooth stroke.  The ball quickly rises, and makes a beautiful arc through the air as it moves toward the green below. Then the ball lands, WHAM, on the green, rolls a few feet and comes to a rest.  You're really happy..... but the greenskeeper is not as you've put a ball mark, or divot, in the surface of the green. If ball marks are not repaired shortly after they occur the wound to the green will remain for 2-3 weeks. If repaired properly the injury heals within a couple of days. Jerry, Bob, Derek, or I will be happy to demonstrate a good technique for making these repairs.  Basically you can push, pull or twist the damaged area with a repair tool to move the turf back into place, and then tap the area flat with your putter so the next golfer has a good surface.  Ball mark repair tools are available at no cost in the pro shop.

Good golfers always repair their ball marks and many will repair marks made by others while they are waiting for others in their group to put.

Thanks for your help in this matter.

To Our Dear Friends and Neighbors

We are absolutely overwhelmed by the love, concern, prayers, cards, food, donations to Hospice, and the beautiful Cleveland Pear tree that  has been planted in my wife’s and my mom’s memory. Having this area, known as the “Heritage Memorial Gardens”, will be a wonderful place to  visit, and to reflect on her life with memories of the good days. As the tree goes through it’s seasons, we will also be reminded of the scripture  we chose to read at her graveside services, Ecclesiastes 2:1-8 which gives account for a season for all things. Receiving so many individual cards, and then seeing all your signatures together on the beautiful reflection card was a most touching and  comforting feeling. We consider all of you very special friends in our lives, and ask God that the blessings you have showered on us will be  showered back on you in all the days ahead. Thank you from all of our families.

Leal, Karen, Jim, Wayne, Mary & Faye

JUNE 7TH BOCCE BALL TOURNAMENT WINNERS
The 2002 bocce champions successfully defended their titles. Al Schwartz and Annie Pick came in 1st again in the team division, with Leslie and Don Kaiser coming in 2nd. Mike Cook came in first again in the individual division, and Annie Pick came in second. Congratulations to all of our winners and everyone who participated in this fun event!

Sandra and Bob Heuay, along with Evelyn Austin and her son-in-law and daughter, and Gary McCullough enjoy the Sunday Popsicle Social we held at pool side on June 8th. Also attending were Doris Maulhardt and her two daughters and grandchildren. It was a yummy way to spend a warm sunny afternoon.

Aldermen Larry Degrodt and Herb Egoroff are seen at our last Happy Hour on June 20th. Future plans for the City of Lake St. Louis were discussed while residents munched on goodies that Leah provided.

Comedy Night June 21st delivered the laughs. Headliner Brad Tassell, who along with MC Stu Cassell and Danny O’Day provided the jokes. The show opened with a funny sound track of famous comics like Bill Cosby, and ended with Tassell playing an electric ukulele.

Rubber Stamp Making and Scrapbooking Class students Sandy Aubuchon and Doris Maulhardt are seen here with instructor Mary Hogenmiller. Four fun classes were held and we will probably run some more classes like this in the fall. Watch for sign up sheets on this really interesting fun class.
