Ron Furr Shakes Things Up
at Hawk Ridge!

Ron FurrAbout 90 people enjoyed the “Touch of Elvis” show that Ron Furr put on May 17th in the clubhouse. He started the show by coming out as “himself” and singing songs by Tom Jones and other well known artists. Then after a brief intermission Ron returned dressed as “Elvis” and did a full set of Elvis hits. In true Elvis fashion he gave out scarves throughout his performance. There are plans to bring Ron back in the future.

ATTENTION NEW RESIDENTS!

Just prior to your closing you should have received a postcard from our Hospitality Chairperson, Andree Wayman. It instructs you to contact her for your “move-in packet.” This packet includes helpful information about utility companies you need to contact, the form you need to get permission to install a satellite dish, and forms that you must turn in to Stu Cassell in order to get your Pool pass and Electronic Entry Card. If you have purchased a home from a private seller you should still get this packet by Andree and turn it in so we have emergency contact information, etc.

If we missed your birthday or anniversary it’s probably because you didn’t turn in a resident information form after you moved in. If you need another form please contact Stu Cassell at the Clubhouse.

Lost & Found
We have a box in the Business Center where we put things that have been left in the Clubhouse. Right now we have a white top, an orange/brownish scarf, and 2 jackets. If these belong to you please come claim them.

Television Directions
Stu has written directions for operating the television, dvd player, and vcr in the clubhouse. We hope this helps those of you confused by “high tech”.

Leal Stewart Brings Home the Gold!

Leal Stewart and Larry HelzermanSeen here with their gold medals are Leal Stewart, age 88 and Larry Helzerman, age 52. The two gentlemen competed in a bocce ball match during the Golden Games that Heritage of Hawk Ridge hosted this year. Unconfirmed sources say first time bocce ball player Helzerman asked Leal “how’s this game played?” To which it is reported that Leal replied, “The object is to keep your balls as far away from the little white ball as you can.” Of course, Leal let Larry know that’s not really how you play before they started their match.  Back to Top

From Stu's Desk or somewhere near it!

May was a challenging month for me. First it was the first full month that I fulfilled all of my new responsibilities. In May as directed, I planned and placed ads for several events open to the public, such as the Memorial Day Golf Scramble, the Ron Furr “Touch of Elvis” show, and I rented the clubhouse both to residents and non-residents. In addition, I coordinated 2 weekly evening Yoga classes with the City of Lake St. Louis, bringing more exposure to HHR as well as providing additional exercise resources to our residents at no additional cost. On the whole those things went well. I want to thank everyone who stayed after the Ron Furr show to help my wife and I clean up. It was much appreciated. When a bunch of people pitch in like that it doesn’t take much time to put the clubhouse back in order, and it really helps Mary Rose and I - especially when we face a 28 mile ride back home late at night. I don’t take this help for granted. Without it I am limited to how much I can do by myself, and it affects party planning.

Other News - By now most of you know that my assistant Courtney Haines left us, and is being replaced by a resident, Nancy Withey. With her skills, experience, and willingness to take on new responsibilities, Nancy will greatly broaden the scope of that position. For starters, she has indicated an interest in occasionally driving the bus. I know that she will be a great asset to our recreation program as well as the property management aspects of the office. In addition to myself and Nancy, Bob Bell and Janet Cook have been added to our insurance policy and once they get a little practice they will be able to drive the bus as well.

I want to give a special thanks to Annie Pick who served as block captain of Seahawk for a full year, and to Sandy Aubuchon who has volunteered to replace Annie. Block captains help distribute all of the notices and newsletters that go out and are a valuable community resource. I also want to thank Andree and Garth Wayman for all the times they gathered the soiled table cloths after parties and laundered and folded them. We recently switched to a linen service that is providing us with new table cloths and is responsible for cleaning them for just $1.50 each. My last thank you goes to Pat Roberts, who has offered to chair a decorating committee. If anyone is interested in helping her, please let her know. As we get more residents and I get busier I will have less time in general and resident volunteers really help!

We had a great turnout for our Memorial Day Golf Scramble - about 24 residents and guests competed for trophies and pro-shop prizes. After the scramble Leah served a delicious bbq that everyone enjoyed.

Gayle Cattau and Stephanie HempelPictured here, Gayle Cattau and Stephanie Hempel came in 1st Place. Kevin and Kathleen Wayman came in 2nd Place, and Don and Leslie Kaiser came in 3rd. “Closet to the hole” on #4 was Lowell Barnes, and “closest to the hole” on #9 was resident Paul Stedman. Dave Williams and Stu Cassell won trophies for “last place” which they reluctantly accepted.

From the Bunker
The West Nile Virus concerns golfers as well as normal people.  As a precaution I treat all stagnant waters in and adjacent to the golf course, as well as any other areas that come to my attention.  I rarely see a mosquito on the course during the day and I personally have had no mosquito bites since I started working here about one year ago.

On to bigger winged creatures.  Here¹s a list of birds Derek or I¹ve seen. I¹m sure there are plenty more!  Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Little Blue Heron, Green Heron, Snow Goose, Canada Goose, Mallard, Turkey Vulture, Red-Tailed Hawk, Turkey, Bobwhite, Sparrow Hawk, Coot, Killdeer, Spotted Sandpiper, Mourning Dove, Chimney Swift, Flicker, Eastern Kingbird, Horned Lark, Barn Swallow, Crow, Eastern Bluebird, Robin, Mockingbird, Starling, Red-Winged Blackbird, Eastern Meadowlark, Grackle, Cowbird, House Sparrow.  How long is your list?  Al Wagner

Evening Yoga Classes

Our first session of evening Yoga classes with the City of Lake St. Louis went very well, so we are planning another session of classes. The first class will start on Monday June 16th and run through July 23rd. Classes are every Monday and Wednesday evening from 5:45 pm to 6:45 pm in the Grande Ballroom of the Clubhouse. We are exploring the possibility of additional exercise classes under a similar arrangement with Lake St. Louis.

Block Captains Wanted!

We need a block captain for the south side of Hawks Landing for homes 2036 - 2060, and the 3 houses on Pigeon. Andree Wayman has been delivering notices to these houses but her route is now up to 17 homes! The new route currently includes 9 homes. Being a block captain is a great way to meet your neighbors, get some exercise and help your community. If you are available to become a block captain please contact Stu Cassell at the Clubhouse.

Golden Games - Volunteers do great!

Golden Games VolunteersOur thanks to Pat Turner, Gary McCullough, Karen Singleton, and Andree Wayman for helping us host the Bocce Ball event of the 2003 St. Charles Golden Games. We also want to thank Jeanette Hage, Annie Pick, and especially Garth Wayman - who were more or less “drafted” to help during the competition. It was a long hot afternoon, but we heard from the Golden Games committee that we had one of the most organized and well run events this year. The Heritage volunteers really made the event what it was and we thank all of them. We’ll probably host this event each year and will put the call out again for help.

Looks like a Winner at Fairmount!
Janet CookJanet Cook holds a winning ticket for a race
during our trip to Fairmount Race Track in May.

Goodbye to a Dear Friend …

Augusta StewartOne of our “original settlers” Augusta Stewart died recently, and we shall miss her wonderful spirit and competitive nature. She’s seen here at the left at our first Mother’s Day Ice Cream Social 2002 with her great grandchildren, daughter Karen, and husband Leal in the background. Augusta joined us for donut socials and dinner parties, and was a winner in our Wheel of Fortune and Family Feud Games. She was fun, sweet, and very intelligent. She will be missed but never forgotten. A tree has been planted in her memory on the common ground near the 9th golf tee.

Our prayers go out to her family.
