Our evening began with a deli dinner consisting of mesquite turkey, roast beef, maple ham, and pastrami and corn beef from the Posh Nosh in Clayton. In addition we had a cheese tray with provel, longhorn colby, baby Swiss, and American. Coleslaw from Bandanas Restaurant, along with potato salad were also served. Let’s not forget dessert! Dinner guests had their choice of either whipped cream or custard chocolate éclairs from Lake Forest Bakery in Clayton, or baklava, gourmet cookies, or mini-cheese cakes. Our own Leah Kinsey from our Pro-Shop Grill did a beautiful job of arranging the deli and cheese trays. The St. Louis Strutters, who were here last June, appeared in force, with 7 beautiful dancers, ranging in age from 59 to 74, all moving with the grace and energy of 20 year olds. Their MC Steve kept us laughing and groaning in between costume changes.

CHANGING OF
THE GUARD

In an effort to upgrade the quality of our guard service at the entry, we have made a personnel change. On the day shift now is Brian Smith, who will be the on site supervisor for all of the guards. We have reviewed problems we’ve had in the past, and have also reviewed standing post orders as well. Residents should either use the forms in the business center or call the guard shack to notify them when you are expecting visitors. The telephone number at the guard house is: 636-625-3825.

We have had complaints about 2 large black dogs that have been running loose around the property. They have disturbed people with their barking and pooping. These dogs belong to the Prouhet family at 8707 Wharf Rd. Lake St. Louis, MO. If you see them running loose you can call St. Charles Animal Control at 636-949-7387 and ask for animal control officer Tammy Welters. She is the person that provided us with the owners name and address. She will take the complaint and contact the owners of the dogs.

From Stu's Desk or somewhere near it!

As you know, last month the Bridge Club staged a successful coup and took over much of my message space. A lone card player came sauntering onto the page with several trump cards strapped to her stomach, threatening to blow the place up if I didn’t relinquish some of the space. What was I to do?

But this month I marshaled my forces and not only retook my lost territory but found space for a new larger picture taken more recently than 1968. The subject of this month’s message from me is “Growing Pains”. We now have over 80 residents, and bit by bit we’re going to have to make some changes to deal with the growing numbers, in the interest of all.

For example, I have previously indicated deadlines for signing up for events, classes, etc. For the record, I will never have a problem adding a resident to any class. But parties, especially ones involving food and setting tables up do create some problems for last minute add-ons. For the Strutters deli-dinner I had ordered the éclairs from Lake Forest Bakery, the corn beef and pastrami from the Posh Nosh Deli, and the ham, turkey, and roast beef from Dierbergs, and I picked up the cole slaw from Bandanas, in addition to going to Sam’s for the rolls and potato salad. I had based my orders on the sign-up sheets that came in by Feb. 1st, the stated deadline. For this particular dinner event for a variety of reasons we had seven people who signed up and paid their fees not attend. We also had 4 people who were interested in attending but who didn’t realize they could until it was too late. I am thinking of creating a “stand-by” list for every large event or bus trip, so that people whose plans have changed at the last minute have an opportunity to attend in the event we have a cancellation. The key to this will be notifying me as soon as you know you can’t attend so I can offer your slot to someone else. Obviously, in case of sudden illness you may not be able to always give me notice, and I understand that. The same is true of bus trips. We recently went to the Sheldon for a concert and a resident who had just moved in and didn’t have a chance to sign up for the event asked me to call her in case we had a cancellation. As it turned out, we did have a cancellation, but I wasn’t notified until 10 minutes before we were leaving. I called the resident who wanted to attend, but she just didn’t have time to change and get ready. I had to leave as planned because the event was down on Washington and Grand, the weather was iffy, and I wasn’t absolutely sure where I was going to park the bus.

There are other things that will require some adjustments due to our growing numbers and I will address those in another publication. Again, thanks to all who helped clean up after the Strutters dinner show.

RESIDENT GENERATED ACTIVITIES
Recently, a group of residents have organized some fun activities like going to the movies and having lunch together, and a Book of the Month Club. If you have an idea for an activity or wish to announce an event that you and your neighbors have planned, we have two bulletin boards you may post on at the clubhouse in the Exercise Room and the Arts & Crafts room. These would be events that are not originally on the activity calendar that residents have organized. We are also looking for residents to teach classes to their fellow residents. Virtually any topic, art, hobby, craft or skill is open to sharing with your new friends. If you think you’d like to teach a class, contact Stu.

Tips from Residents

FREE SMOKE DETECTOR BATTERY CHANGES

Linda Halbrook reports that the Wentzville Fire Protection office will come to your house and change the batteries in the smoke detectors that are mounted on those high ceilings free of charge once they start “chirping.” They will do this during the day time when they aren’t busy putting out fires. The number to call to arrange this service is: 636-327-6239.

NEED HELP WITH COMPUTER PROBLEMS?

Bob Bell reports that Computer Paramedic, at 115 W. Pearce Blvd. in Wentzville did a good job fixing his computer. There rates are $65 per hour for house calls, or $50 per hour if you bring your computer to their shop. Their phone number is: 636-332-1335.
