HERITAGE HAWKRIDGE RESIDENTS INVOLVED
IN MAJOR SPORTS UPSET!
Leal Stewart (standing) surprised all who watched the Bocce Ball games of August 17th, by beating local Bocce champ Al Schwartz (seated on bench) 12 - 11. Leal attributes the victory to “clean living”.

Bridge
Club News
Couples Bridge met again August 6th 2002. We had hired magician David Copperfield to create the illusion that the clubhouse had disappeared, but somehow they got wise and found their way into the card room to work that “voodoo that they do so well.”
When all the dust had settled and respective attorneys contacted, here were the final tallies:
-
1st Place in the Swimsuit competition: Hugette Duff with 3880,
-
2nd Place in Congeniality, Carole Waugh with 3620, and
-
3rd place in Talent (she juggled three ripe pears while yodeling) Judy Markham with 1600.
Then as if that weren’t enough mayhem for one month, they met again on August 20th.
-
Garthie, the wonder-trump-er scored 6760,
-
followed by the amazing Carole Waugh who piled up 4270, and
-
Karen Singleton brought up the rear although no one asked her to, (this joke is on time delay and you’ll get it approximately 15 minutes from now). She had 1610, and asked about her score, declared, “I didn’t feel it was right to take more points - after all, there are children starving in Europe!” What a thoughtful lady.
Everyone enjoyed the evening and decided what the heck, let’s do it again on the first and third Tuesday of each month. All players are welcome and encouraged to join either as regulars, irregulars, or subs. The next bridge night for couples will be Sept. 3rd, 2002 at 7:00 pm.
Ladies Bridge - On July 25th the weekly girls bridge group enjoyed a luncheon hosted by Andree Wayman and Jeanette Hage. Eight ladies attended and enjoyed crab stuffed avocado, hot crescent rolls, wine, iced tea and soda, and Swiss dessert rolls. Swiss dessert rolls come with built in utensils for eating them. No they don’t - I made that up. Winners were as follows:
-
Jeanette Hage - $4.00 paid in new crisp unmarked bills,
-
Ulla Noonan - $3.00 in Deutsch Marks, and
-
Pat Goddard, who collected $1.00 worth of soda bottles.
The group continues on Thursdays at 12:30 pm. They had one week where there were enough players for two tables. New people are always welcome. To join call either Andree Wayman at 636-625-2225 or Jeanette Hage at 636-625-0655. Bridge Lessons continue on Sunday nights at 6:30 pm. Sign up at the Clubhouse.

What’s in the Business Center?
Besides the computers and books that the residents have donated, there is a “Lost & Found” box now, forms for notifying the guards of visitors, ARC applications, copies of the latest Resident Roster, and each Wednesday & Sunday there are free copies of the Suburban Journal for your perusal.
Volunteers Needed!
If anyone has the time or interest we could use someone to organize our donated library of books. We also could use some creative people for party decorating.
See Stu for details.

From
Stu's Desk or somewhere near it!
We are entering a new era - previously, when we had just a handful of residents, if a group was playing Bocce Ball there was no one left to do anything else. This past month we had a half dozen golfers out on the golf course, while 6 people played Bocce Ball, and 4 people played tennis.
Our Ted Drewes bus outing had 11 of the 12 bus seats filled, and our Heat of the Night Dance had 46 participants.
Within days of the publication of this newsletter we will be up to nearly 60 residents. My suggestion is that if you are interested in a scheduled day trip, you sign up quickly. Anyone may go on any scheduled day trip, but only the first 12 will be able to ride the bus. The others who wish to participate will need to drive their own cars.
As soon as I set a firm date for a new class or activity I will post a flyer on it in the clubhouse lobby. It might be a good idea to regularly check the clubhouse lobby and sign up sheets because we are rapidly growing to the size where weekly reminder flyers delivered to your doors won’t be possible.
As always if you have an idea for a class, party, or off site day trip, please let me know.
This month’s Luau dinner party, and the St. Charles Princess dinner river cruise were both resident suggested events.

AL SCHWARTZ BIRDIES ON 9!
Activities Director Stu Cassell invited Al Schwartz to join him for a round of golf on his day off (Tuesday). Al had only played 2 other times and was doing as expected for a new player. Both Stu & Al gave the golf gods the obligatory sacrificial balls on #6 - ker-plunk! Teeing from the blues on the 9th hole Al landed within 18 inches of the hole on his first shot, then sunk his putt for a birdie! Not bad for a beginner.

Certain things are synonymous with St. Louis, like the Cardinals, toasted ravioli, and Ted
Drewes. On Sunday, August 11th we took a bus full of residents down to Chippewa for ice cream! From left to right are: Ray Markham, Al Schwartz, Leal Stewart, Judy Markham, Jim Singleton, Karen Singleton, Lynda Schwartz, Stephanie
Hempel, Jackie Prusaczyk, Gary McCullough, and Stu Cassell. Mary Rose Cassell snapped the pix.

Miscellaneous
Tidbits
Our very own “man in the know”, Ray Markham, tells us that the new
owners of the original Golf Clubhouse down by our guard shack are turning
it into an office building, and planning on building a second office
building near it. They said
they might put some retail business in there, but those plans aren’t
firm. Ray also found out that the new Schnucks near highway 40 is
scheduled to go in November of 2003.
Did you know that we have DVD
movies that you can watch on the large screen tv anytime you’d like? So
far we have Charade, Chocolat, The Musketeer, Harry Potter, and The Man
Who Wasn’t There. See Stu if you need to learn how to work the
equipment.

Photo Highlights
In the Heat of the Night Dinner Dance - August 17, 2002
 |
The evening began with a catered dinner from Robbie’s Shrimp & BBQ. We had BBQ beef brisket, bacon wrapped grilled shrimp, pan friend potatoes, mostoccoli, a garden salad, and dinner rolls. For dessert we had our choice of 3 different cakes and a pie. |

 |
After dinner we danced to the music of the Mike Szwedo Quintet, then future resident Gary Turner “volunteered” to read a very funny story everyone helped to write. We handed out slips of paper for people to fill in with nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc - then we plugged them into a story Stu wrote.
