Al Schwartz Amazes Wildlife
Officials at Busch with Catch!

On our fishing trip to Busch Wildlife Preserve, there was plenty of action on Lake 30. Fishing with worms and live minnows, Al Schwartz, Jeanette Hage, Ray Markham, and activities director Stu Cassell had constant bites. But it was Al Schwartz’s stufish.JPG (41524 bytes) catch that astounded local conservation official Melvin Schmecklemeyer. Schmecklemeyer was heard to say, “I am totally amazed at the size of that fish! - I didn’t think a fish that small could get on a hook that big!” And you said you never catch anything, Al!

stufish2.JPG (36156 bytes)It was a beautiful June day, a bit warm, but a gentle breeze kept us cool most of the morning. Joining Stu for the outing at Busch Wildlife were Jeanette Hage, Ray Markham, & Al Schwartz. The fish were biting and we went through quite a lot of worms and minnows. Between us we caught about 9 fish and around noon we stopped and ate ham and turkey sandwiches that we brought along. Stu is seen here looking at his fish which fell off the line just as Al took the picture. Below is the fish that had fallen off of Stu’s line. It was a small catfish that we threw back in.
Next Busch trip is July 12th.

AlFish.JPG (149252 bytes)The fish put up a terrific battle, but in the end Al Schwartz emerged victorious!

Stu!From Stu’s Desk or somewhere near it

In June we had 49 scheduled activities and classes and only had to cancel 2 events due to a lack of sign ups - that’s not bad for a population that is under 50 people.

When the Suburban Journal came out to interview me I told them that what I found the most gratifying as an activities director was the community spirit that I see quickly forming among our growing population. There is such warmth and camaraderie among the residents, such a willingness to welcome new people, to help each other, that it really makes this place special. The residents here have found the secret to staying young - be active, be open to new experiences, and share laughter and love.

I believe this is a great place to live; in fact, when my sisters were in town recently to celebrate my father’s 85th birthday I took them out to HHR on my day off to try to convince them to move back to St. Louis, and out here. One sister fell in love with the Oakleaf and is considering a move when she’s ready to retire. If my wife and I could find a nice home for our two teenagers, (preferably someone else’s) we’d be out here in a heartbeat. It just keeps getting better and better, and the residents are largely the reason - at least that’s how I see it.
